Brazeau County pens letter of support for the Brazeau Hydro Pumped Storage Project

Jun 8, 2018 | 7:00 AM

Brazeau County Council has sent a letter of support to the Alberta government for the Brazeau Hydro Pumped Storage Project.

The project, which is anticipated to bring over 15,000 jobs during construction and 300 ongoing jobs is expected to be located within the existing footprint of the Brazeau Dam, lessening the impact on the environment by using existing reservoirs and dry spillways.

The project’s use of current infrastructure would also fit into the province’s Climate Leadership Plan by diversifying energy supply and replacing coal with a reliable energy source.

There is also the potential for equipment required for the project to be manufactured in Alberta, which would benefit local businesses and workforce.

Preliminary feasibility studies have been completed by Trans Alta on the project, with the company currently in the environmental assessment process.

Brazeau currently generates 355 megawatts of power. The project is expected to more than double the generation of power in the area, with the project being described as “working like a rechargeable battery” due to it storing water for renewable generation when demand is low and generating power when there is demand for it.

The letter was sent to Premier Rachel Notley on behalf of Brazeau County Reeve Bart Guyon and council.
