Cirque du Soleil’s “Crystal” skates into Red Deer

It’s a show unlike any seen before in Red Deer.

Cirque du Soleil’s “Crystal” takes to the ice at the Enmax Centrium for five days starting tonight (Wednesday).

It’s the first time the Quebec-based entertainment company and world’s largest theatrical producer has brought a show to our city. This week also mark’s the Alberta debut for “Crystal” which has been touring since October.

 

 

Here are some interesting facts about “Crystal”:

– It took 17 semis to bring the all of the sets, equipment, costumes and other supplies to Red Deer

– Set up time for the show set was 16 hours

– A crew of 89 people travelled to Red Deer for the production

– Nearly 100 local stagehands assisted the Cirque du Soleil crew in setting up for this week’s performances

– “Crystal” features 36 skaters and acrobats including figure skaters, freestyle skaters, gymnasts and circus performers

– Performers come from countries across the globe including Canada and the United States, France, United Kingdom, Russia, Spain and Brazil

– Skating performers were required to take acrobatics training for the show, and vice versa

– One of the performers, Shawn Sawyer, represented Canada in figure skating at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy

– It is the first ever Cirque du Soleil show to be performed on ice

– The massive wardrobe for the show includes 600 costumes

– All of the music for the show is performed by a live band

Performances at the Enmax Centrium go at 7 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Matinee performances are also slated for Saturday at 12:30 and Sunday at 1:30.
