Rebels stock up at WHL Bantam Draft

The Red Deer Rebels stocked their shelves at the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft on Thursday.

They got started with the seventh overall selection, choosing forward Jayden Grubbe from the Calgary Bisons.

Grubbe racked up 66 points and 104 penalty minutes in 35 regular seasons games with the Bisons last season and added seven points in five playoff games. The Calgary native is listed at 6’1” tall and 181 pounds.

With their second pick of the opening round, 16th overall, the Rebels selected defenceman Kyle Masters from the Okanagan Hockey Academy Edmonton Bantam Prep. Masters had 24 points and 24 penalty minutes in 29 regular season games last season.

Rebels Assistant GM Shaun Sutter was pleased to select both players.

 

 

In round two, the Rebels took Bisons defenceman Trey Patterson with the 28th overall selection. Patterson last season had 25 points and 30 penalty minutes in 36 regular season games. He added five points in nine playoff games.  

In the third round, 50th overall, the Rebels selected forward Josh Medernach, also from OHA Edmonton. A native of Lloydminster, Medernach collected 36 points in 30 regular season games and played for Team Northeast at the Alberta Cup.

The Rebels traded the next pick in the draft, 51st overall, to the Seattle Thunderbirds for a third round pick in 2019 and a sixth round selection in 2018.

The Rebels took defenceman Jeremy Hancock in the fourth round, 72nd overall, from OHA Edmonton. Originally from Melfort, Saskatchewan, Hancock netted 14 points in 26 games last season.

In the fifth round, 94th overall, the Rebels selected forward Chase Bertholet from the Norman Wolves (Manitoba). He racked up an impressive 68 points in 36 games along with 54 penalty minutes.

The Rebels selected their first goaltender of the draft in round six, 102nd overall, going with Dylan Lacroix of the Calgary Northstar Sabres. This past season he posted a 3.54 goals-against-average and .895 save percentage in 21 games.

The seventh round saw the Rebels select Fort St. John Flyers forward Hunter Brown 138th overall. The Fort. St. John native earned 43 goals and 24 assists for 67 points with the Flyers last season.

Red Deer went with another goalie in round eight, 160th overall, with Zane Winter. In bantam AA last season with in Estevan, Winter, who stands 6’3”, posted a 3.45 goals-against-average in 23 games.

The Rebels made one more late trade, sending selections in the ninth and tenth rounds to Kelowna in exchange for a ninth round selection in next year’s draft.

With their final selection in round nine, 182nd overall, Red Deer selected forward Dylan Fader, a native of Vancouver who amassed a whopping 94 points in just 30 games with St. George’s School Bantam Varsity.

Thursday’s draft, held at the Sheraton hotel in Red Deer, featured players born in 2003.
