Crews knock down grass and brush fire in downtown Red Deer

Apr 30, 2018 | 3:29 PM

Red Deer Emergency Services attended to a grass and brush fire in the downtown area on Monday.

Crews responded just after 2 p.m. to a wooded area near 55 Street between 49 Ave. and 50 Ave.

Acting Platoon Chief Allan Kuprowski says they aren’t sure what caused the fire, noting it’ll be tough to pinpoint an exact cause given the current conditions. The fire does not appear to be suspicious.

Dry ground and wind gusts led to the fire growing rather quickly.

“We had a lot of snow and moisture, but it went away quickly. So until things green up a bit we may have more of these types of incidents,” Kuprowski explained. “Everyone has to be careful with any type of open flame, because it can light a fire that can get away from you quite quickly.”

Crews were able to get the fire under control before it spread further south and affected any nearby residences.

Kuprowski says crews will be doing overhaul work on some of the fallen timber in the area to help prevent any future fires from sparking.
