Point in Time homeless count happening tonight

Apr 11, 2018 | 3:55 PM

The Point in Time (PIT) Homeless Count and Survey is being conducted tonight in Red Deer.

It is a coordinated event where volunteers count persons experiencing homelessness and ask them a number of questions to get a snapshot in time of those experiencing homelessness in the community.

The survey will identify age, family status, immigration status, Aboriginal status, income, time spent homeless, and where people are staying (shelters or otherwise).

City of Red Deer officials say the data is one tool among many to help shape programs and services, address issues, and measure progress in The City’s efforts to end homelessness.

This is the first year the count is aligned with the federal count and the province’s ‘7 Cities on Housing and Homelessness.’

Trained volunteers will be paired up before conducting the survey tonight between 9 – 11 p.m. Specialized teams from housing and support agencies will be out Thursday morning covering more sensitive areas, such as camps.

The PIT Count and Survey is funded in part by the Government of Canada’s Homelessness Partnering Strategy.
