Online campsite reservations growing in popularity: Alberta Parks

Feb 21, 2018 | 6:55 AM

lberta Parks started allowing people to reserve their campsites online in 2009 and the process continues to grow in popularity year-over-year.

Kimberly VanNieuvenhuyse, Communications Advisor with Alberta Environment and Parks explains that being able to book a spot online helps people plan ahead.

“Every year, we do more reservations than we did the previous year. Definitely, we are noticing a trend. People like to be able to make plans in advance, get the sites that they like, and make sure that it is set up and ready to go. Our summers are short and we want to make the most of it. This is one way that we do it.”

They open up the system for 90 days in advance meaning that Albertans can book up until just after the May Long Weekend right now.

“It gives people an opportunity. One person can’t come in and book the same campsite for the entire summer.”

The closest sites near Grande Prairie that can be reserved online are at Saskatoon Island Provincial Park, but there are others within driving distance. If the spot you like is booked when you look, VanNieuvenhuyse urges people not to be discouraged.

“It is always good for people to check back to see if there are any cancellations. People might book a spot, something comes up, and they have to cancel it. It is good to keep checking.”

She says they do leave spots for people to make last-minute camping trips throughout spring and summer.
