Family Day Long Weekend activities in central Alberta

Central Albertans will be able to keep themselves busy over the Family Day Long Weekend with numerous communities hosting special events to mark the occasion.

In Red Deer, Festival Hall is hosting a Family Day Friday Dance starting at 6:30 p.m, then on Holiday Monday, the Alberts Sports Hall of Fame and Museum is offering free admission to children from 10:00 am to 5:00 p.m., an event sponsored by Servus Credit Union.

The second annual Family Day Farmer’s Market unfortunately has been postponed due to an unforeseen circumstance and will not be running at the Hampton Inn and Suites on Leva Avenue in Gasoline Alley as initially planned.

In Penhold, the town is hosting Winterfest on Sunday, February 18. It runs from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. at the Penhold Regional Multi-Plex. The event features free skating in the arena, activities in the gym and a fire pit outside with hot dogs and marshmallows.

The Town of Blackfalds is also hosting ‘Winterfest’ celebrations. They will be on Monday, February 19 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Abbey Centre. Activities include a pancake breakfast in support of a second ice surface in town, ice carving workshops and demonstrations, horse wagon rides, ice slides and a snow maze, Fire Department BBQ, a Penguin Dip, free family skate and family bingo.

Winterfest is a weekend-long celebration in the Town of Sylvan Lake. Activities begin Friday, February 16, with two dances at the Community Centre, the first one starting at 6:00 p.m. Saturday includes a pancake breakfast at the Lion’s Hall, Chili and a Bun at the Legion, Frozen Party at the Library, numerous activities on the lake front from noon until 3:00 p.m., Polar Bear Dip, Farmer’s Market, Family Dance at the Legion and fireworks from the Pier at 7:00 p.m. The weekend will wrap-up with two dollar admission at the NexSource Centre on Holiday Monday.

In the Town of Innisfail, Family Day activities will feature some new additions from the Nordic Ski Club and Boys and Girls Club at the Innisfail Ski Hill. Also, a Taste of Curling at the Curling Club from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., a variety of activities in the Arena from Noon until 3:00 p.m., a Family Swim at the Aquatic Centre and free lift tickets and equipment rentals at the Innisfail Ski Hill from 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

In Ponoka, there will be skating on the new skating trail and on the pond in Lion’s Centennial Park all day long on Family Day Monday. Other activities at Centennial Park include face painting at Fort Ostell Museum, hay rides, free family swim at the aquaplex from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. and toboganning at the Tom Hamilton Memorial Hill. Admission is a donation to the Ponoka Food Bank.
