Homes evacuated after winds spark small fire in Penhold

Sep 3, 2017 | 12:26 PM

Residents of seven homes in Penhold were evacuated Saturday night after power lines sparked a small fire.

Crews responded just before 8:30 p.m. to a report of power lines arcing on Minto St. and found three sections of lines arcing and a small grass fire.

Fortis was called into shut off power to the area while crews worked to put out the fire. The Town of Penhold set up a reception centre for affected residents, which included a family with small children along with several pets.

The reception center was shut down by 10:45 p.m.

Penhold Fire Chief Jim Pendergast says the homes will be without power until an electrician can make repairs.

“A representative of the property owners met with the residents and offered accommodations for them. All residents decided to remain in their homes,” he noted. “This was an example of all parties working together to achieve a successful conclusion”.

High winds are believed to have contributed to the cause of the downed arced lines and fire.
