One arrested after flight from and assault on police

Aug 30, 2017 | 2:21 PM

Innisfail and Blackfalds RCMP members were assaulted with pepper spray before successfully arresting a 31-year-old man Tuesday evening.

Shortly after 6 p.m., RCMP located a stolen truck parked in a lot on 67 Street in Red Deer. A spike belt was deployed behind the blue Dodge Ram before police approached the vehicle.

The suspect resisted police from behind the wheel and was eventually able to flee the scene at a high speed. In the process, he flattened both back tires of the truck. RCMP did not pursue for public safety reasons.

Immediately thereafter, Mounties began receiving complaints and public reports of a blue Dodge Ram driving erratically and dangerously, sometimes in the wrong lane and running red lights. Police says the truck even struck a car in a roundabout at 67 Street and Orr Drive before driving away. The driver of the other car was not injured.

Red Deer RCMP moved to intercept the truck again and laid a second spike belt on Gaetz Avenue near 19 Street. The truck avoided it and sped away once again.

When the truck left Red Deer heading towards Penhold, Innisfail Mounties tried intercepting it. The truck was driving solely on rims at this time, leaving marks in the pavement as it drove into Penhold — the rims eventually breaking apart.

Members with Innisfail and Blackfalds RCMP as well as Police Dog Services assisted in arresting the suspect when he abandoned the truck and attempted to enter a Jeep parked at a gas station.

During his arrest, the suspect sprayed five police officers with bear spray. Members suffered minor injuries as a result of struggles with the suspect or being sprayed with bear spray. No citizens were injured during the series of events.

The blue Dodge Ram had been reported stolen out of Red Deer on August 22 and the license plate on it had been reported stolen separately out of Red Deer on August 27.

“The potential for tragedy was extremely high in this situation, and this is a solemn reminder of the tremendous danger criminals in stolen vehicles pose to our communities and to the police who work so hard to apprehend them,” said Staff Sergeant Chris Matechuk with Innisfail RCMP.

The suspect’s name will be released once charges have been sworn before the courts.
