The run or walk options are 5 or 1 km beginning at Bower Ponds.

In February of this year the former Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation merged with the Canadian Cancer Society. Melnyk said it changes nothing about the run itself, but changes the name to the Canadian Cancer Society CIBC Run for the Cure.

“All of the funds will still continue to go to breast cancer that has not changed.”

This is the 30th year for the run in Canada, and the 16th in Red Deer specifically.

The significance of the run being on the first Sunday in October still stands that it is the kick off event to breast cancer awareness month.

“Of course we’ve had a mixture of weather [in the past.] People are asked to come prepared for all conditions, but I guess if you live in Alberta you know that already,” said Melnyk.

At present, registrations are up about 4 per cent over last year which is an encouraging move for the 2017 run. Those interested in taking part are encouraged to sign up for the family friendly, all-ages event.

“It’s amazing how moving the experience is and there is no shortage of tears often at the finish line.”
