Volunteer patient experience program making a difference at Red Deer Regional
Gerry Johnston had something else in mind when he became a volunteer patient experience advisor at Red Deer Regional Hospital.
But for the better part of ten months now, Johnston says he’s enjoyed every minute of it.
“When I got into it I liked it because I get to use some of my past skills where I can asks questions and listen and watch people,” Johnston explained. “They allowed me to tailor my interviews to kind of dig deeper into something that may be driving some of what I’m seeing.”
Alberta Health Services says patient experience advisors have face-to-face conversations with patients and families about their experiences, care and concerns, reducing any fears or anxieties they may have. The advisors also take time to develop relationships with long- or short-stay patients to help them feel calm and comfortable during their stay in hospital. The advisors can answer questions, walk patients through hospital procedures, or just stop by to say “good morning” and share a smile.
