Uber coming to Red Deer next month

Aug 23, 2017 | 12:26 PM

The wheels are finally rolling on Uber’s entry into the Red Deer market.

In an e-mail to rdnewsNOW, Uber spokesperson Jean-Christophe de le Rue would only say, “We remain eager to come offer the benefits of ridesharing to Red Deer in the near future. When we will have a launch date, we will make sure to share more details.”

However, City of Red Deer officials confirm Uber will be operating in our city starting Sept. 8.

The process of bringing Uber to Red Deer has been a lengthy one. Officials with The City of Red Deer, including Mayor Tara Veer, first met with Uber representatives in March of 2016.

While the City currently does not have a bylaw governing ridesharing and/or vehicles for hire, the province passed requirements last year for registration, insurance, driver’s licenses and criminal background checks.

The City of Red Deer, says they are working toward changing their existing Taxi Bylaw to include vehicles for hire. An online survey will be available starting Wednesday afternoon for the public to share their thoughts.

Uber has been holding information sessions in Red Deer as they work on recruiting drivers.
