CLOSING ARGUMENTS TODAY AT RCMP TRIAL

Lawyers are set to present closing arguments today at the RCMP’s Labour Code trial in Moncton stemming from a shooting rampage in New Brunswick in 2014 that left three officers dead and two wounded. The national police force faces four charges based on accusations it failed to provide its members and supervisors with enough information, instruction, equipment and training to adequately handle the rampage.

FAMILIES IN MMIW INQUIRY NEED REASSURANCE: GROUP

An Aboriginal group is calling on organizers of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls to be more transparent about how the process will move forward with the resignation of its executive director. Michele Moreau will leave that post on July 21 for personal reasons. The Native Women’s Association of Canada says a several other executives and staff have quit in recent months, and families need reassurance that the national inquiry is not in jeopardy.

MEDIA HURTS CHINESE-CANADIAN RELATIONS: ENVOY

The Trudeau government should spend less time bowing down to Canadian journalists preoccupied with human rights and get on with negotiating a free trade pact with China, says the country’s ambassador. In an interview with The Canadian Press, Lu Shaye blames the Canadian media for disseminating a negative portrait of his country that depicts it as an abuser of human rights and lacking democracy.

NEW CANADIAN ASTRONAUTS TO VISIT SPACE AGENCY

Canada’s two new astronauts will tour the Canadian Space Agency near Montreal today. Calgary’s Jennifer Sidey and Joshua Kutryk of Fort Saskatchewan, Alta., were named by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Saturday as the country marked its 150th birthday. Sidey has worked as a mechanical engineer while Kutryk is an air force pilot with a degrees in mechanical engineering and defence studies.
