World Indigenous Nations Games coming to Maskwacis

Participants from over 40 countries will be arriving in Maskwacis to begin a 10 day series of events.

World Indigenous Nations Games 2017 will include things such as conferences and cultural gatherings to sporting events. This is the second annual WIN Games series, the last events were held in Brazil in 2015.

Some of the sporting events include canoeing and spear throwing, while some of the team sports include lacrosse, basketball and soccer. All competitions begin at 9 a.m. in various locations around Enoch and Maskwacis.

Conference topics include global issues that Indigenous people face in their respective countries. These issues range from basic human rights, business and food security.

The opening ceremonies for the WIN Games 2017 will be held at Bear Park in Maskwacis on Monday, July 3 at 7 p.m.

Around 4,000 participants will take in the WIN Games 2017 from countries such as Tanzania, South Africa, Panama, New Zealand, Chile, and more.

The WIN Games is an important event connecting Indigenous people from around the world as well as providing Indigenous youth an opportunity to take part in their culture and traditions.

The athletes are being hosted by the Maskwacis Nations (Samson Cree Nation, Ermineskin Cree Nation, Louis Bull Tribe and Montana Band) and Enoch Cree Nation. Athletes Villages are located at the Nipisikopahk Middle School, Samson Cree Nation and the Kispatinaw School in Enoch.

Non-Indigenous peoples are welcome at the WIN Games and can take in sporting events or cultural celebrations from Enoch’s powwow grounds.
