Red Deer County and Town of Penhold move forward with annexation

Jun 21, 2017 | 12:25 PM

Eight quarters of land are one step closer to being annexed by the Town of Penhold.

Following landowner and public consultations, the Town and County have reached an agreement on the terms for annexation. There were no matters not agreed upon at the County Council meeting June 20.

The land to the North and East of the current town boundaries is to be zoned for a mix of commercial, industrial and residential uses.

The last step in the process is the submission of the final negotiation and annexation report to the Municipal Government Board and advertisement of the report for public review.

Other items of note from the County Council meeting include an agreement with the Town of Penhold regarding Range Road 275. The agreement is for the maintenance and associated costs with the portion of the road that lies within the proposed annexed land.

The Summer Village of Norglenwold also submitted an amended notice of intent to annex land. They are seeking to annex three parcels of surrounding land.

County Council also considered a request for funding from the Stephen G. Stephansson Society with the intent to purchase a historical property. The property being sought after is the Buttermaker House in the Hamlet of Markerville.

Financial support was also a topic of conversation from the Holy Trinity Anglican Church to support the restoration of the facility. The amount requested is $75,000 for the repair of the cedar shingle roof as well as the exterior painting and general repairs.

During the public hearings, Council heard a proposal to amend the Land Use Bylaw No. 2006/6, Direct Control District #4, Section 6.0 Springbrook Comprehensive Town Centre, by adding Indoor Shooting Range as a discretionary use.

Many spoke in favor of the indoor shooting range and there were approximately 25 community members in attendance. There would be no sales of guns or ammunition and will be a membership-only facility.
