Grade 6 student named Blackfalds “Mayor for the Day”

For the tenth year in a row, the Town of Blackfalds has hosted a grade 6 student as Mayor for the Day.

Mayor Melodie Stol said the program began out of necessity when a conference date coincided with that of Blackfalds Days.

“People were saying it was disappointing the mayor wouldn’t be there, so we came up with this idea. I can have a substitute mayor lead the parade and be the face of Blackfalds for the day,” said Stol.

The conference date has moved, as has the weekend for Blackfalds Days, so Stol can attend with her Mayor for the Day at her side.

This years’ winner was Chantal Schunk, a grade six student from Iron Ridge Intermediate Campus. Schunk said she found out she was the winner and was very excited, mostly to meet the mayor.

“When I got to meet the mayor she was really funny and kind and I got to wear the chain necklace,” said Schunk.

Both Schunk and the runner up attended the Mayor’s office June 13th to receive their prize packages, and Schunk was given the honor of calling the meeting to order and wearing the Mayor’s Chains of Office.

The contest is only open to grade six students and Stol said that is because they study municipal government in their curriculum. Following Stol’s tours of all grade six classes in Blackfalds, the children are given a question to answer in some type of presentation.

Schunk’s presentation consisted of a poster and Stol said she was impressed with her answers.

“On her poster Chantal said sometimes people think the mayor is bad because they don’t get everything they want, but the reality is we may not be able to afford it,” said Stol.

Schunk’s presentation stood out to Stol with her understanding of how the community and the budget are directly related. In her poster, Schunk also talked about how certain things are too expensive but that if the community wants them perhaps they can fundraise.

“I made a poster and I talked about three issues including how we can make the town of Blackfalds a bit better or things we might need for Blackfalds. So I talked about an ambulance and a high school and an arena,” said Schunk.

Schunk will attend Blackfalds days on Saturday and work beside Stol at the Town Council Pancake Breakfast before leading the parade.

“Her and I are going to travel on that (the Town of Blackfalds parade cart) and greet the people of Blackfalds in our parade,” said Stol.
