UPDATE: RCMP conduct high risk arrest in south Red Deer

Jun 15, 2017 | 4:17 PM

A standoff in south Red Deer that lasted nearly eight hours ended with the arrest of a man wanted on several outstanding warrants.

RCMP say they first located Quentin Strawberry, 35, at an apartment building at the 5100 block of 37 Street at about 1:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Strawberry was wanted for armed robbery with a firearm, assault with a weapon and forcible confinement. Red Deer RCMP issued a media release on June 12 asking the public for information on his whereabouts.

The building he was located in was evacuated in the interest of public safety. Those affected were offered a free shuttle ride to the Collicutt Centre while the incident unfolded.

After negotiations for Strawberry’s surrender proved unsuccessful, the RCMP Emergency Response Team was called in. It was about 9:15 p.m. when police entered the building and took Strawberry and an unnamed woman into custody.

“I’m not guilty, it wasn’t me,” Strawberry yelled as he was led away in handcuffs.

“RCMP thank the public for their cooperation in avoiding the area during the containment and arrest, and especially appreciate the patience of those residents who were displaced during this time,” Cpl. Karen Kay says in a release. “RCMP further thank the public for not endangering police by revealing their positions on social media while the incident unfolded.”

Red Deer RCMP continue to investigate and will issue an update as more information becomes available.
