Sobeys Inc. campaigns aim to raise money for local youth groups

On June 24, Sobeys Inc. will be kicking off two campaigns geared at providing funds to charities with a focus on youth.

One of the campaigns being launched is Kids Paying-It Forward, which aims to help Canadian charities shape future leaders as well as continue the commitment by Sobeys Inc. to community giving.

This program will provide 150 children associated with western Canadian charities the opportunity to donate $500 worth of gift cards to a community group that has helped their family, friends or neighbors. Sobeys Inc. will be donating $75,000 to the initiative.

Canada Screams for Ice Cream Day will be taking place at the same time on June 24, at which time the funds will be handed out to the kids deemed the ambassadors for Kids Paying-It Forward.

For a minimum $2 donation, community members will receive an ice cream bar in store.

The events are being held at Sobeys, Safeway and IGA stores in western Canada. To up the ante, Sobeys Inc. will match a total of $100,000 in donations for the Canada Screams for Ice Cream Day.

Every cent of the ice cream donations goes back to charities in western Canada to help provide healthy meals and snacks. Money raised locally will be supporting Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) Red Deer.

BBBS will be on hand during the event helping to hand out ice cream.

“Big Brothers Big Sisters will choose a kid in their group to give the $500 to for the Kids Pay-It Forward Program. That kid who gets chosen gets to choose a charity to give the funds to,” said Zach Aslin, HR Manager – Sobeys South.

Aslin said some of the charities that could see the funds donated locally could include places such as Ronald McDonald House, Women’s Outreach Centre or even elementary school lunch programs.

Both campaigns are kicking off to help celebrate Canada 150. Aslin said with that in mind the focus on youth is more-so a focus on “the up and comers.”

“With Canada turning 150 this year, part of that is moving into the new generation and a part of that is helping out those youth and having more of an emphasis on them because they’re going to be the future,” said Aslin.
