Lacombe extends urban hen program for another year

The City of Lacombe is extending its urban hens program for another year.

Council on Monday accepted City administration’s recommendation to extend the expiration time for the urban hen licenses issued in 2017 to December 31, 2018.

Mayor Steve Christie said council was pleased to hear that no formal complaints have been received thus far concerning the maintenance of the properties involved or the welfare of the birds.

“In fact, the City has received at least four other inquiries about obtaining licenses. However, we are making no changes to the number of licenses issued as there seems to be sufficient supply to meet demand,” Christie said.

A request from the public in the fall of 2015 seeking permission to house hens at private residences within city limits led to the passing of a bylaw allowing 10 urban hen licenses as part of a year-long pilot project.

All 10 licenses were issued for the period July 2016 to June 2017, allowing those residential property owners or tenants to have up to four hens, subject to a number of health, safety and animal welfare conditions:

• Eight active licenses with submitted Premises Identification (PID) numbers ;

• One license with PID number pending; and

• One license returned.

A PID number is a requirement for the ownership of poultry in the province, mandated and administered by Alberta Agriculture and Forestry.
