Storm knocks power out in many areas of Red Deer

Jun 9, 2017 | 7:31 AM

RED DEER – If your area of Red Deer did not lose power at some point last night, you were one of the lucky ones.

At various times throughout the evening, the power went out in parts of the Downtown area, Michener, Clearview, Deer Park, Rosedale, Riverside Meadows, Eastview, Grandview, Normandeau and Kentwood neighbourhoods.

City of Red Deer EL&P Manager Jim Jorgenson describes the damage crews had to deal with.

“Last night, right around 9:30, the storm picked up and we started experiencing some outages, lots of trees down on lines. That interrupted power to quite a few customers. I would say we were somewhere around 2,000 customers impacted at various times,” he says. Crews responded and started to get things sorted out around midnight with some power restored, and largely everything was wrapped up by about 5 a.m. this morning.”

Jorgenson adds the last night’s storm coupled with the one about two weeks ago represents a bit of a unique situation.

“It is storm season, so this stuff can happen,” he admits. “If you see lines down, stay back and call the department because we do rely a lot on input from the public to be able to find out where the trouble is and respond accordingly.”

The vast majority of the outages were caused by branches or trees falling onto the power lines. There was also a power line on the road in Riverside Meadows.

A large portion of Penhold also lost power due to downed lines and in some areas the power was still out this morning.

Some roads within Penhold have also been closed to traffic.
