Familiarization Tour hopes to draw new tourists to Sylvan Lake

This weekend will see Sylvan Lake play host to 10 corporate travel agents from Calgary.

In an effort to bolster the tourism industry in Sylvan Lake, these agents will be given a tour and accommodations for two full days.

Some of the amenities they’ll be shown include Lakefront Park, local pubs and night life, boutique shops and the Meadowlands Golf Course. They will also take part in activities such as a pontoon boat tour, flyboarding, and stops at The Wood Shed, Sylvan Lake Paint Ball, Lakeside Go Karts and Mini golf as well as Rainy Daze Medi-Spa.

Vicki Kurz, Executive Development Officer with the Town of Sylvan Lake, said they are hoping to engage Edmonton travel agents at another time and potentially work with the Comfort Inn or the Best Western. The initial suggestion for the event came from the Days Inn, which Kurz said has been a wonderful initiative.

“The initial reaction was for sure we’d love to promote our community to corporate travel agents. There are many new migrants to Alberta over the past 10 years that don’t even know where Sylvan Lake is,” said Kurz.

One of the amenities that will be seen during the weekend is the NexSource Centre which is set to be an integral part of the Sylvan Lake community. Kurz said the suggestion to the travel agents will be for events that can be held at the NexSource Centre including corporate retreats, training sessions and workshops, trade shows, curling bonspiels, hockey tournaments and even weddings.

This weekend is a busy one for the Town of Sylvan Lake with the hosting of 1913 Days, but Kurz said that is a positive thing.

“The travel agents will have exposure to the street festival, food trucks, and the parade which has a large cultural component to it this year.”

The itinerary for the travel agents includes both rain and shine options and Kurz said this was an imperative part to the planning process to ensure as many sites get seen in the two day plan.

Hosting travel agents within the Town has many advantages over simply sending information packets.

“They get a first-hand view and trial of the community as well as its amenities and available activities,” said Kurz.

The Town is partnering with the Sylvan Lake Chamber of Commerce on this initiative as well as the development of their Festival and Event Strategy.
