Alberta fire chiefs in Red Deer for annual conference

Jun 9, 2017 | 12:21 PM

A large contingent of fire chiefs are visiting Red Deer this weekend.

From Saturday through Wednesday, 200 from across Alberta will gather at the Sheraton Hotel for the 70th annual Conference and Trade Show of the Alberta Fire Chiefs Association.

“This annual event is extremely important as it provides an opportunity of Alberta’s fire chiefs to learn new skills, share ideas and prepare to better lead their local departments,” says Peter Krich, President of the Alberta Fire Chiefs Association and Camrose Fire Chief.

One of North America’s leading firefighting instructors, authors and speakers, Frank Viscuso, will be speaking for the first time in Canada. From New Jersey, the focus of Viscuso’s keynote speech will be ‘Step up and Lead.’ Other speakers include former MLA and author Doug Griffiths, retired Prince Albert Fire Department Chief Les Karpluk and retired Lamont County Regional Fire Chief Randy Siemens.

The conference also includes a medal ceremony to recognize commitment and service. This year, 193 medals will be presented. Lieutenant Governor Lois Mitchell and Municipal Affairs Minister Shaye Anderson will be in attendance for both the medal and opening ceremonies.

There is also a trade show where exhibitors will demonstrate some of the newest equipment and tech for firefighting, emergency response and fire department management. It takes place Sunday evening and all day on Monday. There will be more than 120 exhibitors in attendance.

The Alberta Fire Chiefs Association, formed in 1948, is comprised of fire chiefs from 450 fire departments from throughout Alberta. Collectively they represent approximately 13,000 firefighters, 11,000 of which are volunteers.
