New lodge at Camp Alexo now complete

A new addition to Camp Alexo in Nordegg marks a new beginning for Red Deer-based Youth HQ.

The Eagle’s Nest Rotary Lodge will hold its grand opening this summer, signaling the final step in the camp’s master plan.

“The Camp Alexo Master Plan is a $2.4 million project that ran for three years, involving 1,060 caring volunteers who donated over 38,000 hours and garnered heavy support from community businesses, supporters and donors,” says Kris Fleckenstein, Youth HQ Board Chair. “This was a community-wide effort that will benefit children, youth, families, groups and organizations throughout central Alberta well into the future. This marks a remarkable milestone for Youth HQ.”

Fund Development Officer John Johnston, who’s been with Youth HQ for 34 years, says he’s seen the impact Camp Alexo has on kids.

“It’s outstanding and I’m just very passionate about what a camp can do and making a difference for a child who wants to experience camp. We call it a place to create memories and that’s what it is,” he says. “The community has given us this gift, and now it’s our job to be stewards of this and to look after this gift and make sure it’s looking after and servicing children and families for many years to come.”

The Eagle’s Nest will serve as the main hub of the camp and includes a dining area, full kitchen, and space for large group programs. It will also be made available to the community.

The 4,800 sq. ft. facility, which is twice as large as the old one, also meets the camp’s capacity of 120, which was increased when cabins were redone in a previous upgrade.

The lodge’s grand opening takes place June 24 from 11 until 4 at Camp Alexo. It will feature a ceremony, camp tours, a BBQ, and a campfire program with Alexo youth counsellors.
