Bashaw and Mirror soon to be connected with new waterline

Ground has been broken on the latest portion of the Highway 12/21 Regional Waterline.

The segment, which represents the fifth phase of the commission’s system, will connect Mirror and Bashaw to what is now an 84 kilometre long line.

“The Mirror to Bashaw segment is a vital component of continuous water delivery from the Stettler Water Treatment Plant to communities,” says Brenda Knight, commission Chair. “As we all know, the most precious resource on this planet is water both in terms of human health and community long-term sustainability.”

The federal government is contributing $3.5 million towards this portion of the project through the Clean Water and Wastewater Fund — 50 per cent of its cost.

The province is providing $2.8 million through its Water for Life program, while the commission is picking up the rest ($0.7 million).

Commission Manager Keith Boras says there are two, possibly three more phases planned, the next being from Ferintosh to Edberg, though that likely won’t be complete for another three years. Boras says it depends on how soon the commission can secure funding from different levels of government. Eventually, the waterline would also connect Alix to Clive.

Stantec has been commissioned to do the work on the latest leg of the waterline.
