A wildfire expert’s report into the Fort McMurray wildfire suggests plans to protect communities from future blazes should include preventative action by homeowners.
Alan Westhaver’s report for the Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction says a blizzard of embers ignited dry grass, leaves, pine needles, fences, patio decks, wood piles, evergreens and ornamental shrubs that were too close to homes.
The report states only a few homes caught fire due to direct contact with the flames or heat from the burning forest.
Westhaver says more attention must be paid to raising awareness among homeowners and governments about landscaping and building practices that will reduce the risk.
