Red Deer man charged with killing two women in Lloydminster to face trial

A Red Deer man has been ordered to stand trial, accused of killing two Aboriginal women in the Lloydminster area.

Gordon Alfred Rogers, 60, is charged with two counts of first degree murder in the deaths of Jeanette Chief and Violet Heathen.

The body of Chief, 48, was found in June 2007, four days after she was last seen in Lloydminster.

Heathen, who was 49, was last seen in the same city in May 2009. Her remains were found that December in the nearby village of Kitscotty.

Following a lengthy investigation by RCMP, Rogers was arrested and charged in March 2016.

Police have said Rogers was living in Red Deer at the time of the murders and had a relationship with Heathen, but did not know Chief. Both women were from the Onion Lake Cree Nation north of Lloydminster.

A preliminary hearing for Rogers was held this week in Vermillion. Dates for his trial have not been set.
