Rebels open playoffs with shutout loss in Lethbridge

It was a disappointing start to the 2018 WHL playoffs for the Red Deer Rebels in Lethbridge Friday night.

The hometown Hurricanes handed it to Red Deer 6-0 to take a 1-0 best of seven series lead over the visiting Rebels.

Both teams were held scoreless after twenty minutes but things opened up in the second when Lethbridge got on the board first with a goal from Taylor Ross at 3:01 on the power play following a holding penalty to Red Deer’s Dawson Barteaux.

The Canes then went up 2-0 just over five minutes later when Tate Olson scored at 8:23 to pick up his first goal of the playoffs as well.

In the third, Lethbridge put the game away with four more unanswered goals courtesy of Brad Morrison at 6:50, Jordy Bellerive at 10:08 on the power play, Logan Barlage at 15:18 on the power play and Jake Elmer at 16:52 to make it a 6-0 final.

Shots on goal finished 30-26 in favour of Red Deer with the Hurricanes’ Logan Flodell earning the shutout and first star of the game.

In addition, Lethbridge went 3 for 3 on the power play while Red Deer was 0 for 7.

Game two in the best of seven series goes Saturday night, 7:00 p.m. at the Enmax Centre in Lethbridge.
