All Day Hockey Game at St. Francis raising money for Alberta Cancer Foundation

Student’s at Red Deer’s St. Francis of Assisi Middle School came together on Friday to help raise money for the Alberta Cancer Foundation by taking part in an All Day Hockey Game.

It’s the second time the school has hosted this event, with 2015 being the first under much colder conditions according to Grade Six Teacher Michelle Frunchak.

She says this is a companion event to the World’s Longest Hockey Game in Sherwood Park.

“I think it’s important for the students to give back to the community,” says Frunchak. “Realistically, most of the students have been impacted in one way or another through family members and friends through this horrible disease and if we can do a little bit to give back and help maybe with research or finding cures, then we’re all for that.”

Frunchack says their fundraising goal for the event is $1,000 and before lunchtime Friday, over half of that had already been raised.

“Students are making donations to get out of class and come and support the players,” explains Frunchak. “As well, we’ve been selling popcorn and hot chocolate today to support that as well.”

“As far as players go, we have about 66 students that will be playing,” points out Frunchak. “Some teachers have hopped on the ice as well, our Administrator as well.”

Frunchak says their main objective with this event is to bring awareness to the Alberta Cancer Foundation’s Terry Fox Profile Program, which is where the money will go specifically.

“We’re encouraging anybody that can, to donate to the World’s Longest Hockey Game,” admits Frunchak. “There’s links on their website for that and basically, the kids, they didn’t hesitate to jump in, make donations, get in and play. They all know it’s for a great cause.”
