UPDATE: Police remove homemade explosive device from Riverside Meadows

Jan 30, 2018 | 10:42 AM

Residents in Riverside Meadows are back in their homes after police removed and defused a homemade explosive device found at a residence in the area.

Red Deer RCMP were executing search warrants at two residences near 58 Street and 53 Avenue at around 10 a.m. when they came across a suspicious item. The RCMP Explosives Device Unit (EDU) was called in from Edmonton and arrived on scene at about 1 p.m.

The suspicious object, which police say appeared to be a homemade explosive device, was removed from the residence and safely disassembled. Preliminary tests of the device showed positive for explosive material.

At the same time as this morning’s search in Riverside Meadows, Sylvan Lake RCMP were executing a simultaneous search warrant at a residence in that town. In all, five people were taken into custody in Red Deer and two were taken into custody in Sylvan Lake.
