Crews respond to large trailer fire on QEII south of Red Deer Wednesday

Dec 10, 2025 | 3:12 PM

Red Deer County Fire Department members responded to what they thought was going to be a small fire Wednesday morning.

Crews were dispatched just prior to 8 a.m. to the northbound lanes of the QEII Highway, just south of Gasoline Alley, where the trailer portion of a semi truck was on fire.

It was initially a small blaze but quickly the trailer became fully involved with flames, says Drayton Bussiere, fire chief.

Bussiere says the trailer was empty, and that by the time they’d arrived, the driver had disconnected the tractor from the trailer.

There were no injuries, nor damage to other vehicles or structures.

The cause is unknown, though it’s quite possible it was a mechanical issue, he adds.

One lane of the highway was closed with crews on scene until about 10:30 a.m.

The trailer was completely destroyed, and Red Deer County Fire continues to investigate.
