Final 2022 wildfire numbers in Alberta released

The province has released the final numbers for its 2022 wildfire season, which officially came to an end on Monday.

There were 1,259 wildfires across Alberta this year, which is above the five-year average of 1,107.

However, the total area of Alberta forest land burned this year, which was 159,280 hectares, was below the five-year average of 190,000 hectares.

Locally, there were 82 wildfires in the Grande Prairie Forest Management Area, which burned over 105 hectares.

The Peace River Forest Area had 122 fires that burned 98 hectares.
