RDP Athletes of the Week and schedule: Sept. 26, 2022

Red Deer Polytechnic Athletics is very proud to announce Sein Furuyama (Queens Soccer) and Grant Johnson (Kings Soccer) as the Fas Gas RDP Athletes of the Week.

Both first-year student-athletes made a tremendous impact in their respective team’s success this past weekend.

Sein Furuyama – Queens Soccer
Hometown – Kobe, Japan
Academic Upgrading (1st year)

Sein Furuyama was outstanding for the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Soccer team (4-1-0) this past weekend. The talented first-year striker scored eight goals and added two assists in a pair of home victories. With the wins, the RDP Queens moved into second place in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Women’s Soccer South Division.

In Saturday’s convincing 14-1 decision over the Medicine Hat College Rattlers, the Academic Upgrading student recorded six goals and two assists, and was named the North Star Sports Queens Player of the Game. Then in Sunday’s 5-1 victory over the Lethbridge College Kodiaks, Japan’s Furuyama powered the Queens with two goals. She leads ACAC Women’s Soccer with 16 goals.

Legal Assistant Diploma (1st year)

Grant Johnson’s game continues to grow with the second place Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Soccer team (2-1-1). The first-year striker contributed two goals and two assists in the Kings’ win and tie on the weekend.

In Saturday’s 4-2 victory over the Medicine Hat College Rattlers, the Legal Assistant Diploma student had one goal and two assists. Johnson set up the Polytechnic’s first and third goals and then scored his team’s fourth marker, providing some insurance.

Red Deer’s Johnson exhibited his quickness and opened the scoring for the RDP Kings against the Lethbridge College Kodiaks on Sunday. The Kings and Kodiaks played to a 2-2 draw.

Over four games, Johnson has recorded three goals and three assists, and sits second in team points behind captain Ajdin Sarcevic.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE

Cross Country Running | Saturday, October 1 | Grand Prix #3 | Concordia University of Edmonton

The Red Deer Polytechnic Cross Country Running team will look to continue its early season success at Running Room Grand Prix #3 in Edmonton. At the previous competitions this year, the Kings and Queens have ranked among the top two teams in their respective divisions. Both the RDP Kings and Queens finished second at Grand Prix #1 in Medicine Hat and then the two squads advanced to first place at Grand Prix #2 in Calgary. The return of Daniel Szucs has been a boost for the RDP Kings. He placed fourth (27:23) among ACAC male runners over 8 km at Running Room Grand Prix #2. At Grand Prix #1, Jenica Swartz (24:22) led the Queens over 6 km, finishing third among ACAC female runners

Queens Soccer | Saturday, October 1 | 12 pm | Olds College

The second place Red Deer Polytechnic Queens (4-1-0) will face the fifth seed Broncos (2-1-1) in Olds. The RDP Queens have averaged nine goals per game, ranking first in ACAC Women’s Soccer. Ten different members of the Queens have recorded a goal this season and 12 student-athletes have at least one point. The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens also have the second best defence in the south, only allowing 1.2 goals against per game.

Queens Soccer | Sunday, October 2 | 12 pm | SAIT

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens (4-1-0) will play the first place SAIT Trojans (5-0-0) on the road. In the previous meeting between the two teams, the Trojans edged the Queens 4-3, but the RDP Queens didn’t have their full lineup available. The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens are the only team in ACAC Women’s Soccer that has scored against the SAIT Trojans this season.

Kings Soccer | Saturday, October 1 | 2 pm | Olds College

The second place Red Deer Polytechnic Kings (2-1-1) will challenge the fourth place Olds College Broncos (1-1-2) on the road. Over four games, the Kings have scored 14 goals and have allowed 11. Nine different Kings have recorded at least one point. Captain Ajdin Sarcevic leads the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings with four goals and two assists.

Kings Soccer | Sunday, October 2 | 2 pm | SAIT

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings (2-1-1) will challenge the first place SAIT Trojans (5-0-0) in Calgary. The Trojans took the season opener 7-4 over the Kings.
