Several fire advisories in place across central Alberta

With the warming weather, a number of central Alberta communities have new fire-related advisories in place.

Town of Ponoka – Fire Advisory

  • Approved backyard fire pits that have a non-combustible mesh screen cover and meet all the requirements under the Town of Ponoka’s Fire Protection Services Bylaw;
  • Other wood or charcoal burning appliances that meet accepted requirements under the Town’s Bylaw;
  • Portable propane fire pits and barbeques;
  • Burns barrels with approved permits (commercial industrial districts only); and
  • Fireworks with approved permits, which are only being approved on a case-by-case basis.

Kneehill County – Fire Advisory

  • Campfires, backyard fires, and charcoal briquettes are allowed.
  • New burn permits will be issued on a case-by-case basis.
  • If conditions worsen, a Fire Restriction or Fire Ban may be instated.
  • Any burning without a valid fire permit, other than a campfire, is prohibited.

Three Hills – Fire Ban

  • Due to limited water supply.
  • Under a fire ban, no campfires, backyard fires, or charcoal briquettes are allowed.
  • Gas or propane stoves/barbeques and portable propane fire pits ARE allowed.
  • All fire permits are suspended or cancelled, and no new fire permits will be issued.

Town of Rimbey, Ponoka County – Fire Advisory

  • All existing permits will be allowed to expire and any further fire (open burn) and fireworks permits will be considered &/or issued on a case-by-case basis only.
  • We encourage residents to please refrain from non-essential burning until conditions improve.
  • The following are still permitted: burns with approved permits, internal household fire places, fires contained within approved facilities and appliances in designed camping & recreational areas, portable propane fire pits & appliances, BBQs & smokers using charcoals and pellets

Village of Caroline, Rocky Mountain House – Fire Restriction

PROHIBITED:

  • All outdoor wood fires are banned on public lands, including backcountry or random camping areas;
  • Fireworks and exploding targets.

ALLOWED:

  • Safe wood campfires on private land and within provincial campgrounds as long as they are inside an engineered campfire ring;
  • Backyard fire pits on private land;
  • Charcoal briquette barbeques;
  • Gas and liquid powered appliances (stoves, lanterns, fire rings);
  • Open flame oil devices (turkey deep fryers, tiki torches);
  • Catalytic or infrared-style heaters;
  • Indoor wood fires (such as inside a facility, building, tent or RV) and contained within a device with a chimney and spark arrestor.

ARE NOTIFIED BURNS ALLOWED?

All fire notifications are suspended or cancelled. If the burning is industry (energy, forestry) or agricultural related, an assessment for any notified burn will be made by a chief fire officer. Any questions related to burn notification please contact fireadmin@clearwatercounty.ca, Monday through Friday 8:00am- 4:30pm.

Never leave a campfire unattended. Soak it, stir it and soak it again until cool to the touch to ensure it is extinguished. For emergencies call 911, and if you see a wildfire, report it immediately by calling 310-FIRE.
