Emergency crews on scene of fatal pedestrian collision near Lake Louise

Aug 5, 2021 | 4:01 PM

RCMP say their scene investigation of a fatal pedestrian collision along Highway 1 near Lake Louise has now been completed.

The initial investigation has determined that on Aug. 5 at approximately 9:15 a.m., a couple from Ontario parked their vehicle at a rest area located east of Lake Louise. They got out of their vehicle and were taking photographs when a westbound pickup truck struck them on the shoulder of the roadway.

EMS and STARS arrived on scene and Mounties say attempts to resuscitate the 39 year old male from Ontario were unsuccessful and he died on scene. The female was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries.

Police say the truck did not stop and nearby detachments were notified. Just before 11:00 a.m., Golden RCMP found the vehicle involved in the collision and after further investigation, arrested the driver.

The RCMP collision analyst attended the scene, and the RCMP’s Criminal Collision Investigation Team is also assisting with the investigation.

Rhowel Esperanza, 45, of Calgary, has been charged with dangerous driving causing death, dangerous driving causing bodily harm, failing to stop after an accident resulting in death, and failing to stop after an accident resulting in bodily harm.

Police say the judicial process is underway to have Esperanza brought back to Alberta to face his charges.

An update will be provided when the accused’s judicial release hearing has been completed in Alberta.
