Flexibility given for spring high school sports, track and field provincials cancelled

Mar 10, 2021 | 10:36 AM

The Alberta Schools Athletics Association is allowing more flexibility for all 12 of its spring sports.

Football season will commence March 15 and continue through June 30. All other ASAA sports are approved to open their season of play starting March 10 and continue through June 5.

Sports that are normally permitted in the spring season, such as golf, football and cross-country running, can continue to do so, the association says.

Government of Alberta restrictions still apply, meaning that no interschool competition is permitted at this time. The next update from the province is expected March 21.

Participation in school athletic activities can only occur with the approval of a school’s principal and school jurisdiction, via its School Superintendent.

On Tuesday, the ASAA announced the cancellation of its Provincial Track & Field championships for the 2020-21 school year as the current provincial directives do not permit any interschool sport activities, leaving no option where track & field provincials could be held in the foreseeable future.
