Tender awarded for new playground structures at Sylvan Lake’s Centennial Park

Wheels are now in motion to establish a new playground in the heart of Sylvan Lake this year.

On Feb. 8, town council approved a report to award the tender for Centennial Park Playground to Canadian Recreation Solutions for an amount not to exceed $370,000 – exclusive of GST.

The project, which aims to be a destination playground in the community, was re-tendered this year after a suitable tender failed to materialize in 2020.

Town officials note the project also has a larger budget than last year, with an additional $100,000 coming from the 2020 paid parking revenue or other capital projects, as identified by council.

The current Centennial Park Playground is regularly used throughout the year with additional usage in the summer months, according to town officials.

In 2020, the playground was identified for removal and replacement due to safety risks from wear and tear over the years. In addition, higher usability was desired to accommodate peak usage.

Critical components of the new playground are anticipated to include play features for ages 1-5 and 5-12, multi-story play structures and structures for inclusive play.

Town officials say the 2021 budget is sufficiently funded for the construction of the new playground for $370,000.00.

Now that the tender has been awarded, administration will engage with the proponent to finalize the design, components and colours.

Exact timing of the project, however, will depend on weather conditions, the COVID-19 situation and ability of crews to perform the work; with the completion date to be no later than Jun. 18.

Town officials say the proposed timeline will be for removal of the existing play structure and site work in April, with the installation of the new play structure by May long weekend.
