Sylvan Lake’s newest sports and recreation area is getting financial support from Lacombe County.

County council voted at their meeting on Thursday to approve funding two per cent of the project, as was being sought by the Town of Sylvan Lake based on county usership at its existing recreation facilities, up to a maximum of $429,923.

This funding will be provided through the county’s Recreation Capital Assistance Reserve and will be paid as the project progresses.

Earlier this month, Red Deer County council approved $350,000 for the new multi-sport park located in southwest Sylvan Lake.

The $23 million park will cover 80 acres and feature six baseball diamonds, outdoor hockey rink, volleyball courts, soccer and multi-sport fields and a splash park.

Pogadl Park will also be home to the expansion Sylvan Lake Gulls of the Western Canadian Baseball League. The Gulls have started construction of their $7 million stadium ahead of the 2021 WCBL season.

Lacombe County council also approved contributing $87,557 to the City of Lacombe’s 2020 capital projects at the Lacombe Memorial Centre, GMAG Kinsmen Aquatic Center and GMAG Sportsplex Arenas. The Recreation Capital Assistance Reserve will fund this contribution.

County council also approved a five-year operating grant ($30,000 per year) for MEGlobal Athletic Park (Lacombe Athletic Park Association), as well as $13,000 a year for five years in operating support for the Lacombe Performing Arts Centre.
