A plane crash Saturday afternoon near Thorsby claimed the lives of a man and woman from Rocky Mountain House.

It was at about 1:30 p.m. when the Harmon Rocket Plane crash landed in a field near Township Road 504 and Range Road 21, about 22 km northwest of Thorsby.

The plane caught fire with emergency crews arriving to find both the 59-year-old male pilot and 48-year-old female passenger had passed away.

Leduc County Fire Department held the scene pending arrival of the Transportation Safety Board of Canada, which said Saturday it is headed to the scene in order to conduct its investigation.

Initial investigation determined that the plane was travelling from Rocky Mountain House, though RCMP did not say where it was headed. The cause of the crash is also unknown at this time.
