First Shift program teaching hockey to kids in Red Deer

Feb 22, 2020 | 11:16 AM

The NHL and NHLPA’s First Shift program, in conjunction with Hockey Alberta, is currently giving young kids their first taste of hockey in Red Deer.

The program lasts six weeks and goes every Saturday morning at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre for already registered families. This year, alumni from both the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers are helping out with the skating sessions at Red Deer College.

“I didnt like it too much because my feet hurt,” joked Mark Fistric, former Oiler, about his first time on the ice as a child. “That’s the point of First Shift is just letting the kids come out to have fun and work through those things.”

As much as First Shift is for the kids, it’s also an introduction to the game for many parents.

“My biggest advice is just let the game bring to your kid what it should, and that’s the fun, excitement and camaraderie,” added Fistric. “It also provides life skills, like working well with others, listening, and good work ethic. So just make sure they’re having fun the whole time they’re doing it.”

In Red Deer this winter, there are 44 participants. They all receive a jersey, and get fitted for equipment that they can keep, and all at a very discounted cost, which is often a hindrance to families entering the hockey world.

“First Shift teaches them how to skate, puck handle, fall, all before they actually get thrown into a game,” said Michelle Skilnick, manager of members services, Hockey Alberta. “Of course they also have to learn how to pass and shoot as well. They can learn these skills here in a relaxed environment.”

In addition to the gear, families are also given a voucher to register with their local minor hockey association at a lower rate.

Ponoka Minor Hockey Association and the Edmonton Oilers are also running a series of First Shift classes this month at the Ponoka Culture and Recreation Complex.
