Second cannabis retail sales outlet approved for Gasoline Alley

A second cannabis retail sales outlet has been approved for Gasoline Alley.

The Red Deer County Municipal Planning Commission (MPC) approved a development permit on Tuesday for a cannabis retail sales operation at 184 Leva Avenue.

The location is just up the street from Canna Cabana, the county’s first cannabis retail sales outlet located at 174 Leva Avenue.

County officials say the 1,900 square foot Spiritleaf store will be part of a multi-unit building currently under construction in Gasoline Alley West, with the applicants having already satisfied Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission (AGLC) requirements to sell cannabis in Alberta.

County officials say no concerns were received from the public in regards to the project, nor is the store within 100 metres of a school as defined by The School Act, or a Public Health Facility.

Officials do note, however, that the proposed development does include a list of conditions to be met, including no cannabis consumption on site, no outdoor storage allowed and all safety code permits obtained and a fire inspection passed within 30 days of occupancy among others.

Hours of operation at the store will be limited to 10:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m.

Elsewhere, Red Deer County council granted first reading on Tuesday to a bylaw to amend the County’s Land Use Bylaw as it pertains to cannabis production facilities.

Officials say the amendment is in response to Health Canada changes to the federal license application process which requires an applicant to have a fully built site that meets all the requirements of cannabis regulations.

An applicant for a cannabis production facility is now required by the County to provide proof of a federal license prior to operating.

A Public Hearing regarding the proposed Land Use Bylaw amendment is scheduled for Sept. 17.
