Canadian Blood Services Red Deer in need of donations

May 16, 2019 | 11:30 AM

Canadian Blood Services in Red Deer is joining locations across the country in putting a call out for more blood donations heading into the May long weekend.

Shaun Richer, Territory Manager for central Alberta, says this point in the calendar is always a challenge to keep up inventory levels.

“We do understand people are taking time off and trying to get out of town, so we do understand that schedules are a little frazzled,” says Richer. “We just want to remind everybody that before they take off for their long weekend activities, to come into the blood donation centre to donate blood.”

Richer says they currently have about 60 open appointments at their Red Deer location from now until Saturday.

“All blood types are welcome of course but of special need would be the O-negative blood type,” adds Richer. “The reason for that is that it is the universal blood type so when we do get into those emergency situations, O-negative can be used for anybody.”

For those who would like to donate but are scared of needles, Richer reminds people that when you do come into the clinic, you are literally saving somebody’s life for about 5-10 minutes of discomfort.

“We always suggest that if you do feel uncomfortable or have a fear, it’s always best to bring in a friend and do it together,” he says. “I think the donors feel very rewarded. They feel very accomplished in knowing that again, literally, they’ve helped somebody and they’ve helped save a life.”

Walk-ins are accepted at Canadian Blood Services in Red Deer, but appointments can be made as well, either through the Give Blood App or online at www.blood.ca.
