Red Deer funeral home hit by apparent phone scam

Apr 19, 2019 | 9:49 AM

A Red Deer funeral home appears to have been the victim of a phone scam.

Eventide Funeral Home’s Amber Sieben tells rdnewsNOW that the scam is of the spoofing variety.

“Scammers are calling outbound telephone numbers disguised as us. Eventide Funeral Home would not spam call you,” she says. “We are working on trying to get this situation figured out. We only call families that have chosen us to take care of their loved ones, and they would be aware and expecting a call from us.”

Sieben adds that RCMP have been contacted and they apologize for any inconvenience.

An additional message from Eventide’s managing director Rebekah Sealock also expresses the business’s dismay.

“We were extremely upset to learn that our phone number, along with a few other businesses’ numbers, were used to auto-dial families during the night. I want to reassure the Red Deer community that we did not make those phone calls,” she says.

“I wish to extend an apology to any families affected and thank those that have been understanding and supportive.”

If you have been the victim of a telephone or online scam, you are asked to contact your local RCMP detachment and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
