A Rocky Mountain House couple celebrated this New Year's a little differently.

Sasha Penner and Chris Rewega welcomed their baby boy Ryland William Rewega January 1 at 4:19 a.m., Red Deer Regional Hospital’s first delivery of 2018.

Penner says the whole labour process was difficult, as she had to get an emergency Caesarean.

“From December 30 at 7:30 to about 6 p.m. the 31, I was waiting for the inductions to work. They ended up breaking my water and about an hour later was when full contractions started. It wasn't until about 3 a.m. January 1 when Ryland was starting to decelerate that they decided to do an emergency C-section. 4:19 he was born. A natural birth would have been out of the question because he was facing the wrong direction and had the umbilical cord wrapped around his neck.”

Since the delivery, both are reportedly doing amazing.

Penner adds that they never expected to have their baby on New Year's Day.

“Our due date was January 7 and we were hoping the further away from Christmas, the better," she says.

Ryland William weighed in at 5 pounds, 6 ounces.

Lacombe's New Year's Baby was Sullivan James Bos, born at 10:08 a.m. on Jan. 1 to parents Rebecca and Devin Bos.
