RED DEER- It's something that seemed unfatomable over the past couple of years, but the Red Deer region now has the lowers unemployment rate in the province.

The November unemployment rate for the Red Deer area was 5 per cent. That is down from October's 5.3 per cent and from 7.6 per cent in Nov. 2016.

The Alberta unemployment rate for last month was 7.3 per cent, down from October's 7.8 per cent. The provincial unemployment rate in Nov. of 2016 was 9.0 per cent.

Nationally, the economy created 79,500 net new jobs in November, driving the unemployment rate down four-tenths of a per cent to 5.9 per cent.

That's the lowest the rate has been since February of 2008, before the global financial crisis hit.

The numbers are far better than economists had expected. Statistics Canada says all the gains were driven by full-time work.
