Vandervlis thriving in return to ice following 'freak accident'

Last August, Ryan Vandervlis awoke from a medically-induced coma after suffering severe burns in a freak campfire incident in June involving other current and former members of the Lethbridge Hurricanes in southern Alberta.

Not only did he survive that incident, he is thriving.

New lights bring nighttime skiing to River Bend

Thanks to a $400,000 project that has been years in the making, nighttime skiing is now a reality at River Bend Golf and Recreation Area. 

Grand opening celebrations were held Wednesday for the new "Light Park" which includes nearly four-kilometres of newly-lit ski trails.

NHL veteran and current Hockey Night in Canada analyst Kelly Hrudey will be among those hosting an information session in Red Deer Thursday night focusing on mental health in sports.

Friends on Ice tourney showcasing what ringette has to offer for 35 years

A long-running tournament hosted by the Red Deer Ringette Association is celebrating 35 years this weekend.

The Friends on Ice competition features 70 teams and more than 1000 athletes and coaches this year as teams play out of the Kinsmen Arenas, the Collicutt and at the Dawe Centre.

The Red Deer Optimist Rebels have won their pool and are heading back to the playoffs at the Mac’s Tournament in Calgary.

Red Deer held on to defeat the Notre Dame Hounds 2-1 on Sunday to finish round robin play with a perfect 4-0 record.
