Local sports postponements and cancellations

The sports world is filled with cancellations this week due to the spread of COVID-19.

Local teams and organizations have had seasons paused or cancelled as a result. Below is a list of ongoing stoppages and updates on other sports:

Hockey

Red Deer Rebels – CHL/WHL season paused

Bantam AAA Red Deer Rebels – AMBHL season ended (team won second round of playoffs on Mar. 12)

Red Deer Rustlers – NCHL season paused as per Hockey Canada (trail NCHL final 2-0 to Daysland)

Sylvan Lake Wranglers – HJHL season paused as per Hockey Canada (lead division final 2-1 vs. Mountainview)

Innisfail Eagles – Allan Cup qualifier paused as per Hockey Canada (lead series 3-0 vs. Stony Plain Eagles)

Drayton Valley Thunder – AJHL season paused as per Hockey Canada (awaiting second round series vs. Sherwood Park)

Red Deer Pond Hockey – remainder of season cancelled

RDC Athletics

Kings Hockey – ACAC playoffs paused as per Hockey Canada (awaiting second round series vs. MacEwan)

Kings Volleyball and Queens Volleyball – currently competing at CCAA championships in Quebec and New Brunswick (Mar. 13-15), respectively

Queens Curling – currently competing at CCAA championships in Manitoba

Ringette

As of Friday (Mar. 13) morning, Ringette Canada and Ringette Alberta are monitoring the advice of Canada’s various health authorities.

The U14A and U16B provincials are scheduled for Mar. 13-15 in Airdrie and Leduc, respectively. Events are scheduled for Mar. 20-22 in Lethbridge and Strathmore, as well as Mar. 27-29 in Red Deer and Rockyford.

The status of the Canadian Ringette Championships, which are scheduled for Apr. 5-11 in Ottawa, ON, is also yet to be determined.

ASAA (High school athletics)

The Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association has postponed basketball provincials indefinitely. Provincials were scheduled for Mar. 19-21 in various communities across the province.

The ASAA has also indefinitely postponed wrestling provincials which were scheduled for March 13-14 in Calgary.

Decisions on provincials for cheerleading (Apr. 3-4) and badminton (May 1-2) are still to be determined.

Skiing

The Alberta Alpine Ski Association has cancelled all remaining domestic events this season, which affects the Red Deer Ski Club.
