Better understanding animal-vehicle collisions in Alberta

Sep 10, 2018 | 9:34 AM

The Red Deer River Naturalists are hosting a free event this month aimed at better educating people about the issues around animal-vehicle collisions in Alberta.

Officials say their Speaker of the Month is Sandra MacDougall, Red Deer College Ecology Instructor.

On September 27, MacDougall will outline the significant problem of animal-vehicle collisions in Alberta that are affecting motorist safety and wildlife populations.

MacDougall is expected to provide an overview of the magnitude of this issue in our province and introduce projects that are underway both locally and provincially to better detect and mitigate animal-vehicle collision prone locations.

MacDougall worked with Parks Canada for a number of years conducting grizzly and black bear risk assessments and habitat use studies in Northern National Parks.

However, after her husband and daughter were involved in a moose-vehicle collision in 2007, she turned her attention to road ecology and since then has worked with the Alberta Government and the City of Red Deer on a variety of road ecology projects.

This special event will take place September 27, from 7:30 – 9:30 p.m. at the Kerry Wood Nature Centre in Red Deer, 6300 45 Avenue.

MacDougall’s presentation begins at 8:00 p.m.
