Calkins: Tariffs and Potential Trade War Threaten Our Economy

June 28, 2018 - 3:02pm

A trade war with the United States appears imminent. NAFTA talks have stalled, the United States has placed tariffs on our steel and aluminum exports under the guise of “national security concerns”, and the Liberal Government has set up retaliatory tariffs to go into effect on July 1st. The potential consequences of a trade war are immense. The Canada – U.S. trade relationship totals about $600 Billion per year and over three-quarters of Canadian exports are sent to the United States.

Calkins blasts "Unfair Attack" on Small Business

September 6, 2017 - 3:25pm

As a Member of Parliament in the Conservative Government, I took great pride in the fact that we were able to put more money back in the pockets of hard-working Canadians.  Conservatives believe the taxes should be lower for Canadians:  for businesses, families and individuals.  We created a low tax, competitive environment to drive investment and created hundreds of thousands of private sector jobs.

Justin Trudeau and Bill Morneau intend to raise taxes on hard working middle class families, small business owners and farmers.

Calkins: Canada at 150

July 6, 2017 - 10:19am

Our nation is a country united in the pursuit of an ideal, it is a country founded on opportunity by determined people. Our Fathers of Confederation were determined in their pursuit of a strong and free Canada, a diverse nation with hope and the respect for the rule of law.

Budget 2017 is a Disaster, says MP Calkins

April 3, 2017 - 3:15pm

Liberal Finance Minister Bill Morneau tabled the Trudeau Government’s second budget, which confirmed they have no plan for the economy, job creation, or respect for taxpayer dollars.  For the second year in a row they failed to keep their promise to only run a $10 billion deficit.  In fact they have reneged on their promise to balance the budget by 2019.  An internal document from Finance Canada now says the budget will not be balanced until 2055. Terrible news, considering the Liberals were handed a balanced budget.

Calkins: Pipelines and jobs – Alberta needs both

December 6, 2016 - 4:18pm

Last week Statistics Canada released their employment numbers and the news was not good for Albertans.

Alberta lost 13,000 full time jobs and the unemployment rate is hovering around 10%.  This is not good for the future of our province.

A ray of hope glistened through the storm clouds as well last week when the Liberals approved the Kinder Morgan pipeline project and the Line 3 project.  While neither of these projects are new pipelines they will in fact increase capacity and get our product to tide water if they are built.

CETA a historic deal for Alberta and Canada

November 9, 2016 - 9:27am

During our time in Government Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Honourable Ed Fast along with a host of other people worked tirelessly for seven years to negotiate a deal.  Our team marched the ball down the field and punched it across the goal line.  The only thing left was for the Liberals to kick the point after.

The wind blew and the ball hit the goal posts, we needed an instant replay before Canadians knew if the point after was good.    What should have been an easy play almost turned into a fumble as they overestimated the popularity of their quarterback.
