Women of Excellence Award nominees announced

A record-breaking 51 outstanding women from across central Alberta have been nominated for the 2018 Women of Excellence Awards.

L-R: Lianne Hazell (Red Deer Native Friendship Society), Tanya Schur (Urban Aboriginal Voices Society), Raye St. Denys (Shining Mountains Living Community Services). Their respective organizations along with Metis Urban Housing (which is expected to officially add their support soon) make up the Aboriginal Voices on Housing Network and have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to help end Aboriginal homelessness in Red Deer.

Four local organizations have partnered together to help end homelessness and become more efficient in providing services to Red Deer’s Aboriginal community.

Owen Pimm, 16, Grade 10 French Immersion Honors student at Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School and competitive Cross Country Skier and Triathlon athlete. Pimm has been named the ASDC-Central Male Athlete of the Month for March.

Blindman Industrial Park fire deemed accidental

A fire that gutted a business in the Blindman Industrial Park north of Red Deer March 2 has been deemed accidental.

Dave Brand, Deputy Director of Emergency Management at Red Deer County says the fire at CEDA Resources started in a wash bay at the west-end of the building that morning.
