Quick convictions for Calgary men charged after fatal beating

CALGARY – Two Calgary men accused of killing their live-in landlord in a dispute over utilities and damage deposits have been found guilty of manslaughter.

Brian Lambert and James Beaver were convicted Monday of beating Sutton Bowers in a south-end townhouse in October 2016.

Their trial had been scheduled to last three weeks but the defence agreed both men should be found guilty and the case was wrapped up within two hours.

Court documents show Lambert and Beaver rented rooms in the townhouse within months of each other after Bowers placed an ad on Kijiji in 2016 looking for roommates.

After the fatal beating, the body of the 33-year-old victim was staged to make it appear Bowers had suffered a fatal fall and his attackers waited until the next morning to call 911.

Lambert and Beaver have been released on bail pending a March 26 sentencing hearing.
